About
This site is part of Incorrigibles, a transmedia project about the past and present of young women’s incarceration in the US. From our research and interviews with women who were sent to the New York State Training School for Girls in NY (1904-1975) and other punitive institutions for young women across the country, we became aware of physical and sexual abuse that sometimes took place within these institutions. We also understand how often young women and LGBTQ youth who were, and are, in contact with the criminal legal system have experienced trauma prior to being sent to one of these institutions. If you were sexually abused at the New York State Training School for Girls, you can contact us at info@incorrigibles.org.
Hilda O. sued under New York’s CVA. You can follow her story on the website and in the short documentary film Hilda O. vs. The State of New York.
We deeply appreciate all the work done by Safe Horizon and other organizations in New York who worked to get this legislation passed. We wanted to spread the word about this law and critical timeline in order to enable women who were sexually abused as girls at the Training School — and anyone else who has suffered from child sexual abuse — to speak up and to begin to investigate what justice and healing might look like.
While the window has now closed, we are still dedicated to ending all statutes of limitation for sex abuse. These limiting time periods only serve to protect abusers.
People helped spread the word by sharing this site and taking part in our guerrilla stickering and postering campaign.
